Norris Arm Heritage and Arts Centre
Where the Past and Present Come Together

Upcoming Events

Our Stories

The Norris Arm Heritage and Arts Centre is a little known treasure that holds the past, present and future of Norris Arm behind its doors.

The building itself is a replica of the hangar used by Captain Douglas Fraser in 1937. Capt. Fraser was responsible for checking the weather in the area and reporting to Botwood if conditions were suitable to ferry men to Ireland to fight in the war.

Capt. Fraser lived in the hangar along with two mechanics that maintained the two planes used by the captain. Soon after the completion of the airport in Gander, the services of Capt. Fraser were no longer needed and he left Norris Arm. The hangar no longer used fell to ruins. In 2006, the Canadian Military Reserves built a replica of the hangar, and the Norris Arm Heritage Society had a new home.

The Norris Arm Heritage and Arts Centre is a spacious, modern building with state-of-the-art stage and centre-stage sound system. Yet, upon entering the museum visitors are whisked back in time to the eras of Capt. Fraser, the railway, forestry, Second World Wars and the Paleo-Eskimos with artifacts dating back 5,000 years from the archeological dig at Rattling Brook.
